Frequently Asked Questions

What does Fargo Automation do?

We design and manufacture single packaging machines up to complete packaging lines that meet your written specifications. Our advanced integration service allows for you to have a single FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) at our facility. This ensures that you, the customer, get a realistic FAT run and allows for quicker startup at your factory.

Who is responsible for installing the machinery at our facility?

Once the machinery arrives at your facility, you are responsible for unloading, placing, and leveling the machinery in your facility. You are also responsible for connecting the main electrical and any necessary utilities to the machinery. Our employees will come in and start-up the machinery, ensure safety devices are working properly and cycle the machinery for the first time.

Why is Fargo Automation located in Fargo, ND?

The president and owner was born in ND and has always believed this area of the country has very high caliber individuals who work hard to support customers who want a high caliber machine. Fargo Automation is located very near several universities and two year technical colleges that have very bright and talented individuals that give 100% every day to learn and improve with our customers.

How does Fargo Automation’s technical support work?

We have the same engineers and technicians who designed and built your machine support the machine throughout the life of the system. Our service and support can cross many levels of the business to ensure we have a complete answer for any open items that may be of concern.

What is the primary objective when quoting and building packaging machinery?

We have the highest degree of concern that our customers end up with a machine or full system that meets or exceeds their expectations. We currently focus first on ensuring high runtime and high OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency), then we focus on size and environmental constraints, and finally we ensure the best cost for those given objectives. We will always provide the highest OEE in our industry for an individual machine or a full production line.

What geographical areas has Fargo Automation covered?

USA, Puerto Rico, and Canada

How does Fargo Automation start a project?

We first start by listening to YOU. Then we review your URS (User Requirement Specifications) and any information you can provide to set the constraints of the system you require. System constraints are typically the speed, room layout, product configuration, control system, environment of the system, level of automation or operator interaction, etc. We then provide you with a budgetary cost and lead time for the system to meet your needs.

What does Fargo Automation provide that other do not?

We build machines to your specifications or URS (User Requirement Specifications). We review your system constraints and then decide how we would approach the project to meet your URS. Along with meeting your URS, we develop our concepts for the machine build that will give you the highest OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency) possible.

What is “Top Load” packaging?

We specialize in picking of products and loading them into the top of a box, a carton, a tray, a thermoformer, an indexer, a poucher, etc. Our top loading systems heavily rely on the use of robotics to accomplish the picking and placing of the product into it’s final location. The robotics in our systems allow for easy change over between configurations of products, counts per package, stacking heights, etc.

What control systems and software do you use?

We are an authorized OEM and partnered with Rockwell Automation. All of our machinery is equipped with Allen-Bradley motors and drives and programmed in Rockwell’s RS Logix 5000 software using standard templates for a uniform layout. In addition, we utilize RSView Studio-Machine Edition software for HMIs with the use of graphic alarms throughout the software.

What is our Advanced Integration Service?

When we receive an order to design and manufacture a complete packaging line, we take the liability of integrating all the machinery for the line to run at a high Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) rate. In order to achieve this we first communicate early on in the design process with other OEMs regarding what specifications we need in order to integrate and communicate with their machinery. Detailed reviews are completed to ensure the electrical and mechanical features all fit to what your specifications require. We also use graphic alarms and overall line monitoring to ensure the highest OEE of the line is maintained.

What is Start-up and Training Service?

Once the machinery is installed, we will send a team of technicians (the number of people will depend on the size of the project) to start-up the machinery, ensure the safety devices are working properly and cycle the machinery for the first time. They will run and debug the machinery to ensure that it functions as it did at Factory Acceptance and in accordance with your written specifications. During this time, they will also train your operators and technicians on how to run and maintain the machinery.

What does cGMP mean?

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) or cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) is a term that is recognized worldwide for the control and management of manufacturing and quality control testing of foods and pharmaceutical products. In the US, the phrase “current good manufacturing practice” appears in 501(B) of the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (21USC351). GMPs are enforced in the US by the FDA.
